Compare the decisions, not just the samples.
These are planning questions for an entry-door quote, not specifications for a particular product. The selected manufacturer’s documentation should settle finish, performance and maintenance details.

Steel: specify the finish and the details.
A steel entry door can suit a clean, painted entrance. Compare the actual panel profile beside your brickwork, siding and trim, rather than choosing from a colour swatch alone.
Ask what happens if the finish is scratched, which maintenance products are permitted and whether the quoted colour applies to both sides. Check the frame and threshold materials separately: “steel door” describes the slab, not every component in the opening.
For a replacement enquiry, include any dents, rust, sticking or water marks you have noticed. Those observations help distinguish a finish issue from a wider installation or moisture problem.
Fibreglass: decide how much texture you want.
If you like the appearance of timber, compare wood-grain samples in daylight. Grain depth, stain colour and glass detailing can change the character of the entrance. Smooth finishes are another option to ask about.
Do not assume every fibreglass door has identical performance or maintenance requirements. Request the product specification, finishing instructions and written warranty for the exact model. Check whether refinishing or glass changes affect coverage.

Daylight and privacy need their own conversation.
Consider what can be seen from the street during the day and from outside when your hall is lit at night. Ask to see the actual privacy-glass pattern rather than relying on a small screen image.
- Glass in the slab: compare size, location, privacy and the model’s energy rating.
- Sidelights: note whether existing side panels will stay or be replaced as part of the system.
- Transom: include the glazed section above the door in measurement and finishing discussions.
- Hardware: confirm handle position, lock compatibility, handing and any access needs.
Changing the total opening can affect approvals. Use the Brantford permit and heritage checks before committing to a wider entrance.
Compare the certified model.
Ask for the model number and check it against Natural Resources Canada’s searchable list. An ENERGY STAR claim for a brand is not a substitute for verifying the product you are buying.
Keep the supplied labels and documentation. Energy certification, building requirements and rebate eligibility are separate checks; do not treat one as proof of another. This site does not promise a rebate or a saving on your bill.
Natural Resources Canada notes that poor installation can contribute to drafts, condensation and water leakage. Ask how the opening will be assessed and how the finished assembly will be sealed.
